How to run a loyalty programme for a salon, barbershop or studio

Last updated 27 October 2026

A good loyalty programme for a service business is simple enough to explain in one sentence, shows clients their progress after every visit, and rewards the behaviour you want, which is coming back. A visit-based rule such as “every 6th cut free” is the easiest place to start.

Visit-based or points-based?

Visit-based rewards count visits: every 6th cut free, every 5th session half price. They suit businesses that sell one main service at a steady price, like a barbershop or a groomer.

Points-based rewards give points for spend or for each treatment, and clients exchange points for rewards. They suit studios with many services at different prices.

Keep the rule to one sentence

If clients cannot repeat the rule, they will not remember it. Choose one rule, state it plainly, and avoid exceptions.

Show progress after every visit

The programme only works if clients can see where they are. A message such as “3 visits done, 5 to go” after each visit keeps the reward in mind and gives clients a reason to book the next appointment.

Reward referrals too

A friend who books because of a client is worth more than most advertising. Give the referrer an extra visit towards their reward, and welcome the new client properly.

Know what it costs you

Work out what each reward costs in time and product, and what a returning client is worth over a year. A reward that brings a client back several times usually pays for itself, but check the numbers for your business.

Be clear and fair

State how rewards are earned, when they expire and how they are redeemed. Clear terms avoid disputes and keep you on the right side of consumer law, including the Consumer Protection Act.

Common questions

How many visits should a reward take?

There is no single right number. Choose a gap that clients will reach within a reasonable time for how often they usually visit, so the reward feels within reach.

Do loyalty rewards expire?

They can, but the terms must be clear to clients from the start. Check what is fair and lawful for your business.

Can I run both visits and points?

You can, but one clear rule is easier for clients to understand. Start simple and add more later.
